Why do you need a remodeling project timeline?

  • Winston Churchill once said, “He who fails to plan is planning to fail.”  Yet most remodeling projects begin without a written plan that includes a detailed timeline.  A detailed timeline itemizes the key tasks included in the scope of work and identifies the dates when each task will be started and completed.  Starting without a timeline can result in major disappointments and frustrations with regard to project completion.
  • The timeline forces the remodeler to figure out a number of issues that will impact project completion, such as;
  • Special order materials delivery dates

  • Subcontractor work schedules
  • Building inspections
  • Vacations, holidays, and weekends
  • Countertop and shower door templating & installation
  • Etc.
  • Failure to take many of these items into account can result in underestimation of the completion date.  It is not uncommon for home remodelers whose services are in high demand to schedule the commencement of the next project based on projected completions dates.  So, underestimation can result in even further delays due to reallocation of key personnel.
  • The biggest impact is the inconvenience customers experience when projects run weeks or even months longer than expected.  This can be avoided by simply having a realistic timeline from the beginning.
